Citrus Oils – d-Limonene Powerhouses
Citrus oils are amazing! They are among the lowest price oils but are HUGE powerhouses for all kinds of things because of ONE chemical constituent in the rind of the fruit. That constituent is d-Limonene!
Did you know citrus oils, have the highest percentages of d-Limonene? For instance, cold-pressed orange rind contains 91% d-limonene.
d-Limonene is a phytochemical that has been found to be a powerful immune supporting constituent. It is also mood uplifting, one of the highest antioxidants, it protects our cells and is effective in supporting healthy bodies in all kinds of ways.

Citrus oils neutralize acid in your body and balance Ph.
Citrus oils are among my favorite oils. They smell so good and they are very mood uplifting. Any of the citrus oils are great for diffusing. They clean and deodorize the air while also lifting the mood.
Lemon Oil is purifying and uplifting. Lemon oil is great to clean your hands when in public places.
Citrus oils are wonderful to use in cleaning. Make a spray bottle of water with 15-25 drops of lemon oil to clean in bathroom or on kitchen surfaces.
Lemon Oil has been widely used in skin care to cleanse skin and reduce wrinkles and those occasional pimples we all get every now and then.
Orange Oil is known as a “happy” oil, nurturing feelings of joy and peace. Because of its ability to help support the body’s normal cellular repair processes, orange essential oil makes an uplifting, complexion-brightening addition to any skin-care regimen, while its uplifting, citrus scent can aid relaxation and help lift occasional feelings of crankiness.
Grapefruit Oil is a great complement to any weight management plan. A key ingredient in Slique blend, grapefruit has an uplifting scent shown to help create feelings of satiety, support metabolism, and cleanse the body.
Tangerine Oil contains esters and aldehydes that are sedating and calming. Try tangerine and lavender together to relax before bed time and get a good night’s sleep. Rub them on your feet or take a few drops each in capsule.
Or … Add a couple drops tangerine and lavender to chamomile tea.
Citrus Fresh essential oil blend combines six essential oils: Orange, Tangerine, Grapefruit, Lemon, Mandarin, and Spearmint. This blend has an uplifting, refreshing aroma, and it contains the naturally occurring constituent d-Limonene from the citrus essential oils, as well as carvone from Spearmint.
Caution: Citrus oils are photosensitizing, so avoid applying to skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight or UV light.
Synergistic Essential Oil Blends
We are missing Gary Young more and more as time goes on. We learned so much from him. I have been saving oil tips for over 28 years. Those oil lessons from the early days are so precious. Sadly, many newer members never really got to attend a training with him teaching a class and have no idea the power in properly distilled essential oils.
There has been one thing I have been thinking about for a while is the synergy in Young Living’s essential oil blends.
Synergy relates to the interaction or cooperation of two or more substances to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.
Gary used to talk about how he made the different essential oil blends. He didn’t just throw oils together. There was an order of adding each oil to the blend. He found, by research and testing, the blend was more powerful with the order of oils added to the blend.
Every blend that Gary Young created is tested in the laboratory for the actual chemical components in that blend. In fact, EVERY BATCH of each blend is tested multiple times. Therefore, we know exactly what is in the bottle. When we create our own bends – or combine oils – the oils interact chemically and may become quite different from the individual single oils.
In the past few years, since we started using the easy rollerball recipes, some important information has been getting lost.
Gary used to talk about not adding other oils to blends because of the synergy in each oil blend. He would say you can add ONE oil that is in a blend to amplify that property, but don’t add other oils that are not in the blend. For example, adding extra Wintergreen or Peppermint, or Clove Oils to PanAway.
I am constantly seeing people adding multiple blends in roll-ons and diffuser blend recipes. If you are only going for a nice smell in your diffuser, I guess it doesn’t really matter. If you are using an oil for a purpose, like immune support, don’t make the oil blend less effective by adding other oils to it and by all means, don’t blend multiple blends.
Gary taught us LAYERING. Layering is using one oil, then layer another oil single over the first oil. Gary taught us to WAIT 10 MINUTES before layering another oil blend over the same spot. I often use another oil in another spot on the body if I am using them closer in time.
One example: Gathering + Abundance = WOW! But, put the 2 blends in different spots on the body. Personally, I like Abundance on my ear reflex points
Here is little clip on layering from an article by Jen O’Sullivan:
LAYERING VS. BLENDS (synergies)
Layering is not something that many people practice anymore as most have gone the way of the ever-ready and easy rollerball. I would love to challenge your rollerball use and help you understand the power behind layering AND synergies. You all may know one of the most powerful techniques is called Raindrop Therapy. It is a method of layering oils on your body one at a time. This allows for optimal penetration of each oil and allowing the many diverse constituents within each oil to work powerfully and fully on its own before adding another oil. Some people have decided for ease of use to combine all the oils from the Raindrop method into one tidy little rollerball. This is very counter productive.
Autumn Recipes for Diffuser, Roller, Sprays and More
Diffuser blends for the fall season. These recipes make great rollers and sprays as well. The recipes below are for a standard diffuser and can be adapted easily.
To make a diffuser bomb, multiply the quantity of each oil by 10-20 and place in a dropper bottle with a pretty label. (You can also reuse old YL bottles and add a dropper top.
To make a 10mL roller, have the total number of drops around 30-50 and fill with carrier of choice.
To make a 2oz spray, multiply the drops by 3-5, add a splash of witch hazel and top with water in a glass spray bottle and add a label.
To make an epsom salt bath mix: add desired amount of oils (we generally use about 10 drops) to 1 cup of epsom salts, then place under warm running water. Note: we generally avoid ‘hot’ oils like Cypress, Oregano, and Lemongrass in bath recipes. Use your own judgment, or stick to the more soothing and relaxing blends!
To make a 2oz massage oil from a recipe: double the number of drops (or use your desired amount depending on the essential oils used) to a pump-top bottle, then add V-6 Vegetable Complex or other carrier oil to the top of the bottle. Invert to mix, then use as desired!
